The Mission of EXCEL Academy

By engaging in high quality education, we empower young ladies to become ready, respectful, and responsible citizens who value learning.

From the Principal

Welcome to EXCEL Academy at Morningside Middle School

Thank you for your continuous support of public education and our school. Morningside Middle School became a pioneer among South Carolina's public schools this year by creating single-gender learning environments under one roof. Currently, we house a boys' school and a girls' school on the same campus, with the goal of keeping our students separated. Students have the opportunity to participate in coed activities like school tutoring, academic competitions, and school dances.  We have two school entrances, two main offices, two bus drops and pickups, two principals, and two sets of teachers. South Carolina has become a national leader in offering single-gender programs.  About 500 schools across the country offer all-boy or all-girl classes, and 200 of those are in South Carolina. The research on single-gender education has been very positive.  We are expecting great results. The girls' academy is called "EXCEL Academy"- Excellence in Creativity and Educational Leadership.  Our motto is "Enter to learn. Depart to serve."
Some great aspects of the EXCEL Academy are:
  • Caring and dedicated faculty and staff
  • Leadership Class for all students
  • Additional math and reading instruction for students
  • 2009 South Carolina SIC Riley Award for students
  • 2009 CCSD Community of Readers Award Winner (for the infusion of literacy in all core subjects)
  • 13 student winners of the 2009 CCSD Community of Readers Home Awards (for literacy efforts at home)
  • Events for students- book talks, pep rallies, dances, Town Hall Meetings, assemblies, band, chorus, clubs, sports, PBIS drawings, Students of the Month, and an after school program
  • Lunch Buddies Mentoring Program
  • BRIDGES--the advisor/advisee program where students are guided through their middle school experience by an adult member
  • Culture of Literacy- Partnership with Johns Hopkins University
  • Information Wednesdays (Progress reports sent home every 1st and 3rd Wednesday)
  • Integrated subject area class activities and assignments
  • Mustang Morning Parent Breakfasts with the Principal
  • Dessert Nights with the Principal
  • Special recognition of parents and grandparents
  • Evening computer class at the school for parents (sponsored by the Royal Foundation

Each day our student scholars are expected to arrive on time with school supplies dressed appropriately in their uniforms. Please support us in our effort to encourage proper classroom and school conduct by emphasizing to your child the importance of being good citizens at school. We want our student scholars to realize that education is crucial to their future success.

We look forward to seeing you at our school. Parents are always welcome to come visit with their child (please bring a photo ID). Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to teach your children everyday. It is with this attitude and passion that we will lead all of our future leaders to greatness at EXCEL Academy and beyond

GO MUSTANGS!
